When you are looking at an engagement ring, price often looms large at the forefront of the decision making process. It is hard to know what to expect from a ring within your budget. So here is a very basic breakdown of what you can expect for various price ranges, but remember this is just a very general guide and these prices are based on a very simple and basic diamond cutting.
$125 – $500
This is the absolute lowest you will likely find real diamond rings offered for. If this is your price range, you may want to look at other gemstones instead of diamonds. For this price you will get diamonds of unknown or uncertified quality and only at 0.15-0.25 carats.
$500 – $750
Similar to above range these diamonds will be slightly bigger, but still of a low quality in terms of color and clarity. Carats will be around 0.20-0.30 carats and will also be of unknown and undocumented quality.
$750 – $1,000
This is the price range where you can see the quality start to come out. You will find larger sizes and better quality in terms of color. The slightly larger diamond size also gives you a chance to get a better cut. This is usually the lowest quality level that gets certified so quality can be varied. Most stones will be in the 0.30-0.50 carat range here.
$1,000 – $2,000
High quality diamonds can be found here and many beautiful rings can be made from these stones. They are certified and can be varied in their quality and most carats range from 0.30- 0.70.
$2,000 – $4,500
This range is for larger, high quality diamonds that really show off the sparkle. They are larger in size, usually between 0.35-1.10 carats, and they show color and clarity easily, which makes theses stones so valuable.
$4,500 – $7,500
These are top of line diamonds that simply are stunning! The clarity and color are usually exquisite and they are large enough to be finely cut to absolute perfection! Most have carat measurements of up to 1.5-2.0.
Price ranges can climb much higher than this, with larger 3+ carat stones costing in the upwards of $350,000 to as much as $500,000 or more. However, these stones are usually well out of the range of most people and are usually sought by only collectors and investors. And please remember these are general price ranges and guidelines and can vary depending on where you shop, when you shop, and the specific points of the diamonds and rings you are looking for.
